Stephen Marley's 5 Essential Bob Marley Recordings

How cool would it be to be the son of a legend? According to Stephen Marley, his childhood was pretty regular, but he was given the same musical gifts of his father, Bob Marley. He dropped his debut album, Mind Control, in March which features appearances from his brothers Damian and Julian, Mos Def, Spragga Benz, Ben Harper, Mr. Cheeks and others. We got a chance to chat with Stephen and hit him up for his five essential Bob Marley recordings,"Come on, bro! That’s like asking who is my favorite child!" he told us, but he still gave up the goods!

1. "Exodus" (1977) Bob Marley recorded this song in London, a year after he was shot, and subsequently became the title track of the album. It was Bob's first international hit.

2. "One Love" (1963, 1977) This song was initially recorded in 1963 when Marley was part of The Wailers, but they reunited in 1977 to re-record the song and added it to the Exodus album. The song was released as the single "One Love/People Get Ready" in 1984, three years after Bob's death, and became a huge hit.

3. Catch a Fire (1973) Stephen said it's the whole album. Catch a Fire was the major label debut from Bob Marley and the Wailers and is considered the greatest reggae album of all time by most critics. A song like "Concrete Jungle" still rings true today.

4. "Africa Unite" (1979) This song was on the controversial and most revolutionary Bob Marley album, Survival. "Africa Unite" was a call to end the tyranny going on within African countries and to join together in peace.

5. "Is This Love?" (1978) This song was on the Kaya album, which was a lot more laid back than the revolutionary albums that followed. This song is one of Bob's more romantic joints along with "Turn the Lights Down Low".
