Top 10 Diss Songs of the 90s

Beef evolved in the 1990's. It was no longer just a way to demand attention, it was about respect, reputation and soured relationships. The 90's also saw the emcee using much stronger language, it was not for your children's ears. We judged these on the strength of the lyrical beatdown and how hot the song is overall. There were tons of disses by dozens of emcees in the 1990s, but here's our Top 10 of that decade and the second installment in our three-part series on the Top Diss Songs of All Time.

10. Real Muthaf****n G's - Eazy E (1993) - This was was Eazy's response to Dr. Dre's "Dre Day", where production-wise it was such a bite of Dre's production style. Still though, Eazy had a point about Dre wearing fruity outfits back in the day, plus Eazy was still getting paid off of Dre's hits. Who really won?

9. F**k Compton - Tim Dog (1991) - Timmy is from South Bronx, and he can't stand NWA's curls and shades. That's enough reason for him to diss the bejezels outta Cube and 'em. ("I'll crush Ice Cube/I'm cool with Ice T." Ouch!)

8. Linda Trip - Company Flow (1999) - Mental note: Don't come off as a groupie when trying to squash a beef. El-P recorded a conversation between him and Sole (of Anticon) and threw it in this response diss track to Sole's "Dear Elpee" diss of Company Flow. Seriously, this track hurt Sole's career on all levels.

7. To da Break of Dawn - LL Cool J (1990) - This was the final blow to LL's beef with Kool Moe Dee, plus he threw in Ice-T and MC Hammer in there for good measure.

6. Dollaz & Sense - DJ Quik (1994) - The MC Eiht/DJ Quik beef brought some of the dopest diss songs hip-hop has seen, but this last salvo by Quik really put a fork into the whole thing. Even though Eiht "Def Wish" series was hot, "Dollaz & Sense" topped them all.

5. Dre Day - Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg (1992) - On Dr. Dre's debut album, he went all out including dissing Eazy E, Tim Dog, Luke, and Ice Cube in this classic headbanger.

4. 2nd Round K.O. - Canibus (1998) - Canibus is known for battling himself on wax, but he truly earned his stripes by squaring off against Uncle L in his prime. This lyrical uppercut is something like a blueprint for some of today's illest rhyme pugilists.

3. Hit 'Em Up - 2Pac (1996) - 'Pac unleashed a flurry of diss tracks on numerous emcess, but this was the most memorable of them all going after the Notorious B.I.G. and Bad Boy Records.

2. The B***h in Yoo - Common (1996) - : Produced by the legendary Pete Rock, "The Bitch in Yoo" was Common's response to Ice Cube and Westside Connection's "Westside Slaughtahouse" where Cube claimed that Com was taking shots at the west on "I Used to Love H.E.R."

1. No Vaseline - Ice Cube (1991) - When Eazy-E and NWA's management rubbed Cube the wrong way and then dissed him on "100 Miles & Runnin'", he initiated a flame-throwing match with his former allies.

Says Hashim in the comments section: "No Vaseline is the best diss track because of the effect it had on N.W.A. How often can you point to a song and say that it broke up a super group?"

Ether? How many other diss tracks have become a verb?

"Ether" = 2001

Come on, "hit em up" is the greatest diss song of all time. How is it not number 1?? the 1st words 'pac said set the tone. "Thats why i F*cked your B*tch you fat M*therF*Cker." Classic.

L said...

and i know you said "hit em up" was Pac's greatest but "Toss it up" was a classic diss song also.

Real talks your top three is where its at but I think you guys should talk about the story behind Bitch in Yoo - how Common would just perform the first verse here and there when he used to open for De La Soul. Can't wait for the 2000 and on list..

IMHO, the top shoulda been more like:

1. hit 'em up
2. bitch in yoo
3. second round ko
4. dre day
...etc

[But what do I know I'm from the UK and I don't know sh*t!!!]

Oh but...I think it just sneaks in (1999) but its prob not a top-tenner: Kurupt - "Callin Out Names" where he has a go at DMX, 50 cent and ja-fool amongst others.

That song has some great lyrics!

toss up btw 2nd round & hit em up for #1 for me.

I would have included No Rest For The Wicked. Cypress going after Cube. Also Cube made a real good answer with King of the Hill but No Rest... is just a ferosius diss. The beat is pure murder and B-Real is on fire. Probably my favourite diss of alltime next to Takeover and Ether.

this has been bothering me for a long time. what does eddie bauer mean? pac says it in hit em up and its also in chin check and i keep hearing it. i know its a clothing line, but what are they talking about? whats the significance?

"Gimme that Beat Bitch"

i gotta agree with homeboy anonymous . Ice Cube got merked by Cypress Hill. They even had some dude who sounded just like Cube . Genius.

2nd Round knockout for the No. 1 Spot.......

Bitch in yoo is the best diss track ever because it is the only one that got beyond some "you suck" "i fucked your girl" "I am so nice" "you're a fack thug" superficial bullshit.

Com took ice cube apart by attacking his character
"slinging bean pies and st ides in the same sentence"

none of those other songs has anything like that.

Guess I'm the only one that was never really impressed with 2nd round k.o. I felt LL's rebuttal to that was on point and slightly better..guess the hype surrounding Canibus didn't help..

I'm glad someone said that "Bitch in Yoo" was better than "Hit 'Em Up". I get tired of people hyping Pac's shit just because he's Pac. Ok, it was a decent diss track, but not on the same level as Common's...

"Hit em up" is hella Overrated, but it had people Shook when it came out more than any diss EVER.

"Against All Odds" is my personal #1, the realest shit he ever wrote...
better than the Cube song.

PAT said...

I never thought Hit Em Up was anything much. Pac came with the energy like he always does but lyrically, he wasn't say much at all. Plus the Outlawz made the diss worse.

real muthaphuckin g's should have been #3 while hit em up #5(come on he got at dre and snoop harder than pac got at bad boy and all them).. and dre day should have been #10.. besides that list was great I wouldn't even number them even though no vaseline isn't my favorite out of all them

To be honest, i thought Soles El-p Diss (dear elpee) was a way better song.

sure, he showed his true groveling colours in linda tripp, but the verses in dear elpee smashed it.
i couldnt even hear what el-p was going on about most of the time in linda tripp, and when i could he just came across as a dick.

Hit em Up gotta be #1 if only for "Mobb Deep. Don't one of you niggas got sickle cell or something?" The first time I heard that, all I could say was "Damn!" That shit was REAL personal.

When I begin to play this Seal Online game, I first go to buy seal online cegel to buy some my favorite and beautiful clothes to dress up my character. I have spent cheap seal cegel to buy my favorite cloth. I mean we have anime and some necessary seal online cegel based games that do not look really kid dish. Though I will admit with my own seal cegel I went crazy on leveling with DECO. Some of the skills that we can use our sealonline cegel to improve to look amazing, and are fun to just watch honestly.

Big's "Who Shot Ya?" and "Long Kiss Goodnight" contain subliminal message to Pac.

Anonymous said...

People often don't realize on "Real Muthaf****n G's" Eazy's emulation of Dre's production style was intended as parody.

no way pac is a liar!! all that "i fucked yo bitch" bs that came out of his mouth was ridiculous! he neva fucked faith evans. he was only responding to the ever increasing hostility between the east and west coast. especially after he got pieced and blamed it on his, at the time, friend big. that and big had juz dropped ready to die and with it "who shot ya," which pac took personal. as far as "who shot ya" its probably bigs hardest track, then niggaz bleed, and beef.

as far as the top songs of the 1990's 1) bitch in yoo, 2) no vasoline, 3)drop a gem on 'em, 4)2nd round knock out.

for the 2000's, not to include anything made before jan 1,2000, 1) 300 bars and runnin-the game, 2) paper plates-the gza, 3) curtis-killa cam, 4)buss tha tech-slim thugga mutha fucka

Hit em up is the best diss song ever, how often does one track cause such a feud and get the whole of new york to hate the artist for producing it, on top of that it got Pac AND B.I.G killed in the end...wow..NWA split up psshhh, two legends consequently died due to hit 'em up....
